Translational oncology

metastasis, diagnosis, treatment

Research aim

To develop, test, and implement novel therapeutic and diagnostic strategies to combat cancer by integrating fundamental and clinical research.

About us

Fundamental research has yielded phenomenal advances in our understanding of cancer development and progression. However, harnessing such knowledge to improve clinical care has proven to be very difficult. To bridge this gap, fundamental and clinical scientists in our team work closely together. Clinical problems shape the fundamental research program, and research results steer the design of clinical studies.

New insight into disease biology is obtained through analysis of patient-derived tissues and clinical data. Moreover, high-end culturing technologies are used to create collections of patient-specific model systems. These model systems serve as platforms for testing novel treatment concepts and diagnostic strategies, thus creating a basis for the design of clinical studies. In this way we create a circular self-learning system that is aimed at turning scientific discoveries into clinical benefit.

To drive and sustain this Translational Oncology research cycle, we work closely together with academic and commercial research partners, with nationally organized disease-networks, with hospitals, with patient organizations, and with research schools.

Together, we aim to make a difference for the benefit of cancer patients, through research.
