Primary Liver Tumors research group

Bile duct cancer, Liver cancer

Research aim

To improve surveillance, diagnostics, treatment, and outcome for patients with primary liver tumors (hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma) by interdisciplinary and (inter-)national collaborative research

About us

The Primary Liver Tumors research group consists of seven Principal Investigators representing the multidisciplinary approach, including gastroenterology and hepatology, HPB surgery, nuclear medicine, (interventional) radiology, radiotherapy and medical oncology. Due to the rarity of primary liver cancer, a strong regional and national collaboration between key institutes is incorporated in this research group via Oncomid and the Dutch Hepatocellular & Cholangiocarcinoma Group.
Within the research programs of these PI’s, focus is put on improving surveillance and diagnosis, treatment and outcome of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma. The research group has active collaborations in translational research (e.g., Laboratory for Translational Oncology). The UMC Utrecht is an international leading center for radioembolization for HCC, including the development and implementation of Holmium radioembolization for patients with liver tumors. Collaboration is not only aimed for different professionals and disease specific societies, but also with the patient advocacy groups aiming for patient participation in the design and execution of our clinical research as well as to improve information for and counseling of patients.
