Utrecht Osteoarthritis Research – UROAR
Innovative therapies, Joint disease, Patient-centered treatments
Research aim
Our group studies osteoarthritis, from disease mechanisms to treatment strategies. Using a translational approach, we connect lab research to patient care, aiming to create effective diagnostic tools and patient-centered therapies.
About us
The Utrecht Osteoarthritis Research group is dedicated to advancing the understanding and treatment of osteoarthritis, from early onset to late-stage disease. We investigate the mechanisms underlying osteoarthritis to develop patient-centered treatments, leveraging patient stratification to tailor therapies for greater effectiveness and fewer side effects.
Our research spans in vitro studies, in vivo models, and clinical trials. In line with ethical practices, we are actively participate in the transition to minimize the use of animal models by exploring humane and accurate alternatives.
With diverse research lines (see PI webpage), we collaborate with leading academic and industry partners both nationally and internationally. These partnerships drive innovative strategies that bridge research and clinical applications, resulting in several patents and the founding of spin-off companies like ArthroSave, SynerkinePharma, Presurgeo, and Replasia.
Recognized as a “Research Center of Excellence” by ReumaNederland, our group combines integrative and ethical approaches to enhance the quality of life for osteoarthritis patients while contributing to a future of effective and sustainable treatment options.
