Translational breast cancer research group

breast cancer, carcinogenesis, early detection, diagnostics, artificial intelligence, liquid biopsy

Research aim

We aim to optimize early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, especially rare breast cancers like pregnancy associated, male & lobular breast cancer. We refine tissue diagnostics with molecular techniques/AI, and apply nipple fluid/blood tests.

About us

Breast cancer is the most frequent cancer and leading cause of death in women worldwide despite progress in surgery, radiotherapy and systemic treatment. Early detection and prevention are therefore the keys for further improvement.
In our research program, we develop breast cancer detection assays in nipple fluid and blood based on microRNAs, implement AI for better and faster pathology diagnostics, and introduce molecular diagnostic techniques and organoid technology for drug testing. We have special focus in rare breast cancers like pregnancy associated, male and lobular breast cancer.
Our team consists of 4 PIs, 1 postdoc, PhD students, technicians and informaticians. We partner with Johns Hopkins Oncology Center, LUMC, NKI/AVL, Princess Maxima Center and the Hubrecht Institute.
