Research aim

Children with a visual problem due to brain pathology should receive at the Eye Brain Center (EBC) the most advanced ophthalmological diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation in order to improve the better outcome of their visual potential.

About us

The Eye Brain Center (EBC) is an unique collaboration between the department Opthalmology UMC Utrecht (subdivision pediatric neuro-ophthalmology) and paediatric neuro-oncologists of the Princess Maxima Center of Pediatric Oncology. A team of dedicated health professionals work intensively together.
The EBC aims to be a leading health care institution of a national and international network dedicated to the care and the cure of children with a visual problem due to brain pathology.
Besides diagnostic and therapeutic aims, additional value is created through scientific investigations focused to develop and implement innovative solutions in daily heath care practice. One of the most important research line is focused on developing new technologies and devices for investigating the visual field of young and multi-handicapped children.
Moreover, special attention is paid to develop guidelines to enhance accuracy and efficiency for the most appropriate (oncological) treatment in order to improve the visual outcome of these children. Furthermore, long term follow-up studies of visually impaired children due to brain pathology aim to investigate the best patient care and outcomes (KIZZ-NEXT study) .
The EBC is making the difference and is shaping the future of the paediatric oncology and neuro-ophthalmology.
