About us

UCC-SMART is an ongoing prospective cohort study integrating scientific research into patient care. Our interdisciplinary team is united by one vision: improving the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Since the start of the study in 1996, the risk of myocardial infarctions, strokes and cardiovascular mortality has been more than halved. Nevertheless, CVD is currently still a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Upon inclusion, patients with (a high risk for) cardiovascular disease (CVD) undergo a standardized screening program. UCC-SMART covers a long follow-up duration, on average for more than 11 years. Outcomes of interest are collected and adjudicated by an endpoint committee.

The SMART Study Group assesses research proposals that are relevant for the current clinical practice and/or provide new pathophysiological insights that allow better understanding of the atherosclerotic disease process. They are the connecting links with the clinical disciplines and therefore able to efficiently translate important dilemmas into research questions. Research results are often validated in other leading studies in patients with CVD. In addition, the cohort has been the basis for the development of the SMART risk score, which can predict the 10-years risk on new cardiovascular events. The SMART risk score is included in the Dutch Cardiovascular Risk Management guideline and in the international ESC guideline for prevention of CVD.
