Researchers in each of the different teams within the Julius Center contribute as topic experts to health professions education at all levels through courses, guest lectures, and workshops about their specific domain (General Practice & Nursing science, Global Public Health & Bioethics, Epidemiology and Health Economics), within and outside of the UMCU. We are involved in undergraduate and graduate programs. For the qualitative – and mixed methods our teaching covers topics such as research ethics, qualitative research methods, literature reviews, social science theories, and mixed research methods. Our aim is to foster critical reflection on qualitative and mixed methods, ethical awareness, interdisciplinary thinking, and the ability to study complex health challenges, including health inequities and educational practice.
Within each of our teams, we offer internship opportunities for students interested in answering research questions that ask for qualitative – and mixed methods. Interns can take part in ongoing research projects or develop their own topic under supervision, depending on their background and interests. We can always connect you with an expert in the method that is most suitable for your research question. As researchers who propagate interdisciplinary thinking in health and medicine, we all welcome students from diverse fields, including medicine, philosophy, law, history, social sciences, and health sciences. Internships may involve literature reviews, using qualitative or mixed methods, and projects related to healthcare, health professions education, health equity, or policy. Within all departments, we recognize the importance of providing a stimulating academic environment with dedicated supervision and opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary work.

We offer consultation on qualitative and mixed methods of study protocols for researchers developing clinical or biomedical studies. Our support focuses on identifying and addressing issues early in the research design. Depending on the specific research context, the consultation will differ. Please look at the different profiles of our experts to explore that specific consultation would suit your clinical or biomedical studies. We also support researchers developing studies in health professions education, including educational innovations, curriculum development, and evaluation.
Consultations strengthen the methodological quality of your study. We work with researchers from a wide range of disciplines and are available for one-time feedback or ongoing collaboration throughout the research process.
Some senior researchers in the Julius Center design and lead work packages for national and international research consortia. We integrate aspects necessary for the quality of qualitative – and mixed methods within the project plan from the start, supporting open science and innovation. We lead work packages that help to understand the human, organizational, and contextual dimensions of healthcare innovation. We tailor work packages to the needs of the consortium. Examples include needs assessments and context analyses, mixed-methods research strategies, and co-design workshops that help ensure interventions are feasible, acceptable, equitable, context-sensitive, and responsive to the needs of patients, professionals, and communities. Our researchers bring experience in coordinating interdisciplinary research, using qualitative – and mixed methods, and in collaborating with diverse stakeholders. We are available as partners in grant applications for diverse research projects.
