Vascular pulsatility and distensibility measurements

About

MRI velocity measurements of larger arteries are common place. With 7T MRI and dedicated image processing, it is possible to assess blood velocity and its pulsatility in small arteries with a lower limit of about 50-80 µm diameter. For larger arteries, a measure for arterial distensibility (reflecting local vascular stiffness) can be obtained. These measurements can be used study the effect of aging and/or vascular diseases on vascular stiffnes, and to relate vascular stiffness to other (disease) parameters of interest. The technology is available for both the MRI clinical and preclinical 7T MRI scanners. Vessels > 1mm diameter can be measured at the clinical 3T MRI scanners as well.
