Biography

I am an interventional cardiologist and scientist and head of the department of cardiology of the University Medical Center Utrecht. My clinical work includes the percutaneous treatment of obstructive coronary artery disease, including acute myocardial infarction. My translational research focusses on the analysis of big and complex data (e.g. genetic, ehr, imaging), including the use of machine learning and cloud computing, to improve our understanding and the early detection of coronary artery disease and heart failure. To this end we use large population based cohorts, including the Dutch PREVEND and LifeLine cohorts and the UK Biobank. Data on my "omics" research can be found our my website: www.cardiomics.net  In my clinical translational research I am also working on advanced image analysis, device interventions, machine learning, deep learning, and e/m Health to further improve and personalize care for our patients. Currently ongoing diagnostic imaging studies in include the REPLACE-IT (replacement of invasive coronary angiography) and the EARLY-SYNERGY (early detection of obstructive coronary artery disease; www.early-synergy.nl) studies. Currently interventional studies include the GIPS-IV, AXES and MRI-MC studies. Many of my projects based on collaborations with the most influential and creative individuals and research groups in the world.

Research groups

Inherited heart disease (cardiogenetics)

Research aim

We aim to enhance patient and family lives impacted by inherited cardiomyopathies. Our efforts target gene and variant identification, disease mechanisms, factors influencing disease outcomes, therapy optimization, and exploration of novel therapies.
