Biography

Anne Marie de Smet (1959) was trained as an anesthesiologist (University Hospital Groningen) and intensivist (Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis, Amsterdam). She became a staff member of the Division of Perioperative care and Emergency medicine of the University Medical Center Utrecht in 1993. Within the Division, she was responsible for the Intensive Care Unit from 1995 until 2005. In 2002 she started the scientific investigation on infection prevention which lead to a thesis and PhD degree (2009). She held positions in the board of the ‘Staff members’ of the University Medical Center Utrecht from 2000 to 2004 and was active in the first committee on patient safety in the UMCU. Moreover she served as a board member of the Dutch Society of Intensive Care between 2002 and 2008. From August 2006 on,  she combined clinical research on SDD in Utrecht with a staff membership in the Intensive Care Unit of the CWZ  in Nijmegen. In October 2008 she returned to the Intensive Care of the OLVG in Amsterdam.

In 2011 she accepted a position in the UMCG as the chair of the department of Critical Care.

In 2019 she returned to the UMCU as Chair Division of Anesthesiology, Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine. Her fields of interest are infection prevention and patient safety with as main researchfield infectionprevention in critically ill patients.
