As an inter- and transdisciplinary field, Bioethics & Health Humanities brings together bioethics, health law, history of medicine, narrative medicine, medical anthropology, medical social sciences, and patient and public involvement in education, research, and consultation.
The focus of our research is on ethical, legal and social aspects of biomedical innovation, technologies, patient participation, medical communication, governance, global health and clinical care issues. Other key research topics are medical history and narrative medicine. We perform analytical and empirical (qualitative and quantitative) research on these topics.
Our experts support the humanities-dimensions of health care, research, and policy through a range of services. We facilitate moral deliberation sessions to help professionals navigate complex ethical questions, and contribute to education at all levels through teaching, workshops, and curriculum development on topics such as ethics, law, and medical humanities. We offer internships for students interested in exploring ethical, legal, and patient perspectives on health care and research, and provide consultations to researchers on ethical, legal, and communication issues to strengthen study protocols. Our experts lead work packages in national and international research consortia, contribute to committee work that shapes policy and practice, and collaborate across disciplines to integrate the health humanities into health care and innovation. Additionally, we offer medical communication consultation to improve professional-patient interactions and develop effective health information materials.
