Biography

Fiona van Schaik is a gastroenterologist specialized in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) at the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at University Medical Center Utrecht. As part of the IBD team, she is dedicated to delivering high-quality, multidisciplinary care to patients with IBD and serves as head of the IBD outpatient clinic. She continuously strives to improve patient care by developing and implementing innovative facilities, including e-health technologies, home laboratory testing, and intestinal ultrasound, and by implementing new treatment strategies through participation in clinical studies evaluating the efficacy and safety of novel therapeutic modalities. Her clinical research focuses on the pathogenesis and treatment of inflammatory diseases of the intestinal tract, with a particular focus on IBD and immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-induced colitis. Within the field of IBD, she is president of the Dutch Initiative on Crohn’s and Colitis (ICC), through which she initiates and participates in several nationwide studies using real-world data to evaluate novel IBD therapies and improve the quality of care for patients with IBD in the Netherlands. In the field of ICI-induced colitis, Fiona founded the multicenter, multinational Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor-induced Enterocolitis in Europe (ICE) consortium. The consortium brings together researchers and clinicians across Europe with the aim of advancing the understanding of the pathogenesis of ICI-induced enterocolitis and evaluating the effectiveness and safety of current and emerging treatment strategies.
