UMC Utrecht Researcher Roel Vermeulen Features in the Podcast Series “(De)F√ormule: The Formula for a Long and Healthy Life”

What is the key to a long and healthy life? How can science, technology, and personal choices shape a future where we all stay healthier for longer? These are the central questions explored in the new podcast series “(De)F√ormule,” produced by Universiteit van Nederland in partnership with the Institute 4 Preventive Health, part of the EWUU alliance, which brings together Eindhoven University of Technology, Wageningen University & Research, Utrecht University, and University Medical Center Utrecht.

This series offers an accessible take on cutting-edge health research. Scientists from the EWUU alliance—including Roel Vermeulen (UU/UMC Utrecht), Ellen Kampman (WUR), Kirsten Verkooijen (WUR), and Masi Mohammadi (TU/e)—share their insights into how we can optimise our lives for better health and longevity.

The opening episode focuses on the perspective of Julius Center professor Roel Vermeulen.

(De)F√ormule: How to Stay Healthy as You Age – Roel Vermeulen

Roel Vermeulen investigates the impact of our environment on health, with a particular focus on the effects of air pollution and other environmental factors on well-being. His research highlights how exposure to pollution and chemicals can lead to severe health issues, but also demonstrates how innovative interventions and policies can mitigate these negative impacts.

In the episode, Vermeulen explains how improving living environments—such as reducing air pollution and increasing access to green spaces—can help prevent diseases like cardiovascular conditions, asthma, and even certain cancers. He underscores the importance of government action and technological innovation in creating healthier environments that prioritise public well-being.

About the alliance

In the EWUU alliance Eindhoven University of Technology, Wageningen University & Research, Utrecht University and University Medical Centre Utrecht connect their scientific knowledge in research and education. The four institutions cooperate on a cross-disciplinary basis in the areas in which they complement each other. The motto of EWUU is ‘Challenging future generations’. Using an unconventional approach, the alliance challenges new generations of researchers, tutors and students to work together, across disciplines, without imposing limits in advance. It focuses on research results with an impact on society.

Bridging Science and Practice

The “(De)F√ormule” podcast aligns seamlessly with the mission of the Institute 4 Preventive Health, which aims to create a society where preventive health takes centre stage. By connecting science with real-world practice, the institute highlights innovative solutions that promote health and tackle societal challenges. Through this podcast, it brings the value of scientific research to life in an engaging and relatable way.
