Dean
Arno Hoes has been Dean of UMC Utrecht since 2019.
Arno W. Hoes (1958) studied Medicine at the Radboud University in Nijmegen and obtained his PhD degree at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He was trained in Clinical Epidemiology at Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. In 1998 he was appointed professor of Clinical Epidemiology in General Practice at Utrecht University / University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht. From 2012 to 2019, he was the Chair/Medical and Scientific Manager of the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care of the UMC Utrecht. Since 2019, he is Dean and Vice-Chair of the Executive Board of UMC Utrecht.
Arno Hoes focuses his research primarily on the prevention, (early) diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases, particularly heart failure. Additionally, he has a strong interest in clinical research methodologies, especially diagnostic research and clinical trials.
He plays a key role in fostering collaboration across disciplines to enhance the integration of interdisciplinary research and education, embedding these within UMC Utrecht and Utrecht Science Park. These efforts extend to the strategic alliance between UMC Utrecht, Eindhoven University of Technology, Wageningen University & Research, and Utrecht University (EWUU alliance), as well as within the Dutch Federation of University Medical Centers (NFU), where he serves as Chair of the Council of Deans of the UMCs.
He is committed to creating a stimulating and inclusive environment where (healthcare) professionals, students, educators, and researchers can collaborate effectively while having access to cutting-edge technologies, facilities, and knowledge, with the aim to elevate healthcare, education, and research to a higher level. Central to this is increasing societal impact and the practical application of innovations (valorization). Open science and the principles of the The New Utrecht School play a crucial role in this mission.
He has extensive leadership experience both in the Netherlands and internationally, contributing to (inter)national scientific organizations and playing an important part in the development of numerous (inter)national clinical guidelines.
